HPH Podcast with @foundrmagazine Nathan Chan

"Steve Jobs taught people to pay for content online [through the Apple Store.]"

"I tried a few different businesses before launching Foundr Magazine for Young Entrepreneurs. I even tried to sell cologne reviews online!!"

Nathan Chan knew he wanted to feel more fulfilled in his life. He wasn't happy with his job and wanted more. He read loads of books and articles about being an entrepreneur but didn't implement most of what he learned. He searched for a guide to help him start but couldn't find what he needed, so he created it. Foundr Magazine was created to help young entrepreneurs build sustainable businesses. Just over a year ago Nathan quit his full-time job and now focuses full-time on creating products to help entrepreneurs.

He is well versed in many areas, but we've chosen to go deep on how to build a successful online subscription-based publication AND how to increase your Instagram following with engaged followers, who become not only rabid fans, but paying customers.

Sister Power Hustler, Eryka, Publisher of the online beauty, fashion and art publication for today's women of color, Fabulize Mag, submitted some great targeted questions that Nathan answers with a level of detail that will help anyone create a thriving online magazine--and business.

Nathan and I chat about:

  • What it took for a risk-averse person like himself to leave his 'day job' and focus completely on what was then his side hustle
  • How to start a digital publication, from choice of platform, to content and marketing, to team building
  • Why he suggests that we give away our best stuff for free
  • Knowing your market and knowing your competitors
  • The power of social proof and leveraging when you're new in business and to enter new markets
  • His proven process for gaining over 10,000 real and engaged Instagram followers IN 2 WEEKS!!!! (and moreover how you can too)
  • And much, much more

Her Power Hustle Podcast Gwen Jimmere Naturlaicious founder Pitch Your Biz

The $10,000 Way to Describe your Business

In 2013, Gwen Jimmere was in the midst of a tumultuous divorce, had a young son and had just been laid off from her job. Her mortgage was due in 15 days. Then she had an idea. She would approach a newly built Whole Foods store near her home and pitch them to carry her homemade hair care products, Naturalicious. Whole Foods said yes. In 2014, just a year later, Gwen walked away from the Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference with a $10,000 check and a six-month mentorship with Black Enterprise Senior VP/Chief Content Officer Alfred A. Edmond, Jr. Naturalicious is now sold internationally.

Gwen gives insight for you:

  • To craft a winning pitch
  • To leverage 'not winning' pitch a competition
  • About what it took for her to be placed in Whole Foods AND how she leveraged that relationship
  • On her views on getting feedback
  • To market successfully in a saturated market
  • And a host of resources that you'll want to start reading immediately!
